Original enamel on copper art from Dan and Victoria Klaas, Riverside, Ca.
Featuring wall sculptures, enamel on copper mosaics, wildlife art, framed
art, tropical art and more.
My name is Victoria Klaas, and my husband Dan and I are artists
working in the fascinating and rare medium of enamel on copper.
While there are quite a few enamelists who make jewelry or other
small articles, we are relatively unique in the size and style
of the items which we create.
I am the enamelist, and Dan is the metal smith who builds and
finishes the enameled pieces which I produce.
Our creations include modular wall sculptures, large mosaic-style
pieces, and also framed art.
I take great pleasure in the permanent nature of my enamels, as
each creation is unique and original.
With the shrinking coral reefs, diminishing wilderness and
ever-changing nature of our planet, I am provided solace from
knowing that the natural wonders captured in my art will be memorialized in
glass and copper for perhaps centuries to come, untouched by the ravages of
age to inspire generations to come
A Little About Enameling
Simply stated, enameling is the art of kiln-firing finely dried,
usually powdered, glass to a metal surface at very high
temperatures, until the glass melts and permanently bonds to the
metal.
Therefore, you may see that enameling is quite distinct from
painted art. There are no organic pigments in a finished
enamel, so the gem-like hues are astonishingly durable. There
are examples in museums of enamel artwork which is many centuries
old, and these pieces are as beautiful today as they were they day
they were produced.
There is much misinformation disseminated about the Internet
concerning enameling, and enameling may truly be regarded as a
dying art form, with fewer and fewer artists practicing and learning
these amazing skills. Enamel art will always be worthwhile to
purchase due to both its extreme rarity and its beauty and
durability
